Many people talk about grounding. They say things like “You need to ground.” What does that mean? On the metaphysical level it means to be in your body – to be present.

Being grounded is beneficial because it keeps us in the present moment.  That allows us to handle what’s going on (rather than dealing with it later or not at all). We get to be in the flow with life and have more enjoyment. When we show up in the present it benefits everyone we are in relationship with because they are getting the best of us. Clarity and action move to the forefront and we see growth and expansion in our lives.

When someone is out of balance with grounding (too little), they experience difficulty making decisions or being responsible. They feel spacey or are described as “airy-fairy”. They have a hard time focusing, listening and are easily distracted. People in this place have struggles in manifesting their dreams or goals. Their timing may be off.

Some are living in the past – sometimes as an escape or distraction – and miss the interactions and gifts that the present provides. When you’re in the now and grounded, the past has no power over you; it is here for us to learn from. Just as some are in the past, others are worrying about the future and about things that will probably not happen. This robs us of our light, our energy and our joy.

The other side of this challenge is being too grounded. On this side people are overly focused on money and things. Work may be their top or only priority. Relationships suffer or are non-existent. Spirit is lacking or may be absent all together. These people are missing guidance, being connected to something greater than themselves and universal support.  They usually have distant and unsatisfying relationships.

There are many ways to ground. Here is a technique for grounding.

Start by getting in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths, breathing all the way down into your belly. Imagine a red sphere of energy at the base of your spine. Stretch the sphere straight down into the earth creating a column of red energy. Send the energy down to the core of the earth and tie a knot.  Allow the energy to flow back up and reconnect to the base of the spine. Now expand the red column of energy until it is greater than the width of your body. What’s different?  What do you sense now?
